South Jersey's Premier Squirrel Destination

Cherry Hill's tree-lined neighborhoods are squirrel paradise — and we're not talking about the gray squirrels North Jersey deals with. Cherry Hill has heavy populations of both gray and flying squirrels, thanks to mature oak and maple forests throughout the township. Developments like Barclay Farm, Kingston Estates, and Woodcrest were carved from woodlands 50-60 years ago, but those woodlands still surround them. The squirrels didn't leave when the houses went up; they just moved into attics. Flying squirrel colonies of 20-30 animals are common in established neighborhoods, and most homeowners have no idea they're there until the damage is severe.

Why Cherry Hill?

Mature tree coverage throughout established neighborhoods, combined with large lot sizes that maintain natural squirrel habitat directly adjacent to — and overhanging — every roof

Big Houses, Big Attics, Big Problems

Cherry Hill housing is overwhelmingly single-family detached homes on generous lots — the complete opposite of Camden's row homes just 10 minutes away. These are 1960s-80s colonials, split-levels, and contemporaries with large attic spaces and multiple rooflines. Original soffits, fascia boards, and roof vents are reaching the end of their 40-50 year lifespan right when the trees planted at construction have grown to overhang every roof. It's a perfect storm of failing materials and direct wildlife access.

01Local Housing Stock

Large colonials in Kingston Estates with complex rooflines and multiple dormers
Split-levels in Barclay Farm with cathedral ceiling voids and hard-to-inspect spaces
Contemporary homes in the Cherry Hill Mall area with multiple levels and extensive glass
Older ranches with additions over the decades that created mismatched rooflines

02Common Entry Point Issues

Multiple rooflines creating numerous junction points where different materials meet and deteriorate
Large attic spaces with climate control providing comfortable wildlife living conditions year-round
Mature landscaping planted 50+ years ago now giving wildlife direct roof access from tree branches
Home additions over the decades creating seams between old and new construction
Cherry Hill Case Study

The Barclay Farm Flying Squirrel Colony

01 The Problem

A homeowner in this established 1960s development heard what she thought were mice in the attic for three winters running. She tried snap traps, poison bait stations, and two different pest control companies. The noise never stopped, and in the third winter, she noticed insulation falling from an attic vent.

Location: Barclay Farm

02 What We Found

Our nighttime inspection revealed 27 flying squirrels. These nocturnal, colonial animals sound exactly like mice to the untrained ear — light scurrying and scratching — but they live in large family groups and are nearly impossible to control with rodent methods. They were entering through a deteriorated gable vent and had been in residence for at least 5 years based on the insulation damage and accumulated waste we found.

03 The Solution

We installed one-way exclusion devices at the gable vent and two secondary entry points we identified, then trapped actively for 4 weeks. The entire colony was removed and all exterior vulnerabilities were sealed with steel mesh that matched the home's aesthetic.

The Result

Zero squirrel activity in two years. The homeowner had spent years on ineffective treatments before our permanent solution. The attic insulation damage would have been far less costly to address five years earlier.

Unique Challenges in Cherry Hill

01

Mature tree canopy throughout provides squirrel highways to every single roof in established neighborhoods

02

Flying squirrel colonies are extremely common and are almost always misidentified as mice for years

03

Large lot sizes mean wildlife doesn't need to travel far between yards — it's all connected habitat

04

Affluent area means high expectations for aesthetic exterior solutions that don't diminish curb appeal

05

Original 1960s-70s construction materials all reaching end of life simultaneously across entire developments

06

Proximity to Cooper River Park and county open space creates constant wildlife pressure from protected areas
